5 Star Review "The God Who Wasn't There" Should Be Required Viewing

MelvinStanley - (November 21, 2005) This film was a journey into a place that many people fear to tread: examining the fact that the story of Christ is nothing more than a myth. In today's world it's politically incorrect to question anything to do with the Christian faith. This film bravely grabs that bull by the horns and not only wrestles it to the ground, but also gives us logical reasons why we should be questioning the dogma we hear day in and day out. It's a journey into science, mythology, silent films, current movies and how Christianity uses fear to control our children. Director Brian Flemming takes us on a tour of his own experience at a fundamentalist school. It gives us an idea of the nightmares being

john davies - (February 03, 2002) This grand, lavish, romantic costume drama, called by some France's answer to Gone with the Wind, and voted by the French Academy their country's greatest film,is a magnificent evocation of the theatre and teeming street life in 1830's Paris.Revolving round a beautiful, enigmatic courtesan(Arletty,in her defining role),a ruthless criminal,a soft-hearted mime artist and a romantic stage actor, the film's cast, art direction and intertwining of different plot strands are superlative. While Arletty's independent spirit was taken to represent nazi-occupied France itself (an allegory which passed unnoticed by the German censors),the film is a glorious indulgence and a visual feast.

Flick01 - (February 15, 2007) I was under the impression this film was almost universally loved but after reading the reviews here I guess it's how you look at it. I like the movie for a number of reasons. (1) It's a pretty accurate portrait of the way things were in that part of the country during the time the story takes place. (2) There isn't a bad or even mediocre performance among any of the actors and a case could be made for Brock Peters and Gregory Peck being excellent. (3) Good story dealing with morals and justice that has you cheering inside for the good guy even though you know he doesn't have a chance of winning. (4) I began to notice things which I had missed the first time I saw the film, such as the meani

5 Star Review Spooky horror classic

Kastas - (02/17/2012) The Changeling is a fascinating horror/suspense film by Peter Medak that bases itself on some true accounts. Released at the start of the slasher movie craze in 1980, The Changeling might disappoint gore fans with its almost bloodless story, but what it lacks in the graphic horror department the sheer suspense and creepiness will surely make up for it. The Changeling stars George C. Scott (Patton)as John Russell, a widow music composer/music teacher. After losing his wife and daughter in a freak accident, he decides to go back to teaching and moves to a rental house. It's in this new house that Mr. Russell begins experiencing weird events, like rattling windows and noises in the attic. Apparently the house is haunted by the spirit of a small child. Mr. Russell is determined to find out who this child is and why is he manifesting himself. The movie unravels at a slow, albeit interesting pace. Medak is good with setting a creepy mood from the start and the melancholic, haunting soundtrack adds a touch of sadness to the story of the small, crippled child who was wrongfully murdered in the house many, many years ago.The DVD has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and looks quite good, although I'll have to wonder why this classic hasn't been released on bluray. Soundwise it's just plain OK. As you would expect with a movie this old, the stereo mix is decent enough without being overwhelming. This is not an FX laden movie, it's more about the story, the mood and the acting, stuff that a lot of modern movies have forgotten about.

2 Star Review Nothing Special

BigBluMonster - (01/25/2012) If you have the DVD Hyperdrive edition don't bother. Not a great remastering and pretty poor extras for a modern Blu Ray release. Sound varies from acceptable to BADLY distorted. Bit of a let-down after all the delays and waiting.

5 Star Review Fantastic surreal Horror

iamagod123 - (09/20/2011) Saw a pre-release of this film and fell in love with it! It's dark and unsettling in the mold of David Lynch. The soundtrack is wonderful, featuring artists such as Kristeen Young. A wonderful film, buy it if you like dark, surreal horror! and you won't be disappointed!
